We are pleased to announce, on behalf of Pierian Records of Austin,
Texas, that the long-promised CD of the Welte-Mignon performances
of the legendary "Walkuere of the Piano", Teresa Carreno, has just
been released as Vol. 6 of the Ken Caswell collection.
Ken was successful in locating the following program for this
fine-sounding example of the performance of his Feurich reproducing
piano:
WELTE
360 SCHUBERT-LISZT - Soirees de Viennes (Vienna Evenings) No.6, a
364 CHOPIN - Nocturne, Op. 37, No. 2, G
365 LISZT - Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6, Db
366 CHOPIN - Nocturne, Op. 48, No. 1, c
367 CHOPIN - Ballade No. 1, Op. 23, g
368 LISZT - Annees de pelerinage (Years of Pilgrimage),
2nd Year, #4, Db: Sonetto 47/Petrarca
369 CHOPIN - Ballade No. 3, Op. 47, Ab
370 SMETANA - Etude de concert, Op. 17: By the Seashore
371 CARRENO - Mi Teresita - Little Waltz
372 BEETHOVEN - Piano Sonata, Op. 53, C "Waldstein" 1st mvt.
373 BEETHOVEN - Piano Sonata, Op. 53, C "Waldstein" 2nd and 3rd mvts.
In such standards as the Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6 (Carreno was
quoted as saying that the Welte-Mignon had captured her playing exactly
as she intended), the Ballades Nos. l, Op. 23 and 3, Op. 47 and the
delightful Smetana "By the Seashore", one can hear the great lady's
fabled playing, so much admired and praised in her time.
The "Waldstein" Sonata is wonderfully sonorous (it was one of the first
of the Beethoven sonatas to be recorded on rolls) also. And indeed the
entire recital is truly set forth and entirely representative of the
accuracy and careful attention to detail typical of Welte, faithfully
captured by the Feurich reproducing piano.
The CD, Pierian 0022, may be purchased directly from Ken Caswell at
3336 Mt. Bonnell Road, Austin, TX 78731, tel.: 1-512-323-0033 and/or
from Amazon.com.
The highest recommendation here for this latest addition to the
priceless Pierian transfers from the Welte-Mignon catalog. Ken is
now working on the next release: Alfredo Casella's roll recordings,
including the only extant recording of the Italian composer, Ottorino
Respighi' in four-hand performance (with Casella) of his "Fountains
of Rome."
