"Orchestrien aus dem Schwarzwald" by Juettemann
By Sabine Schnieder

-- forwarded message, please reply to sender and MMD --

Dear Sirs, Allow us to present the latest publication in our Edition
Bochinsky catalogue: "Orchestrien aus dem Schwarzwald (Orchestrions
of the Black Forest)", by Herbert Juettemann.

The orchestrions of the Black Forest are world-famous. In their
heyday between 1830 and 1930, orchestrions built in the Black Forest
were sold all over the world. This book provides a comprehensive
insight into their history as well as that of their manufacturers.
Taking the mechanical clocks of the Black Forest as its point of
departure, the first part of the book deals with the development and
manufacture of orchestrions in the Black Forest. The second part
focuses upon the manufacturers themselves, of which the firms Blessing,
Welte, Imhof & Mukle and Gebrueder Weber were the most important.

From automatic bands (with "mechanical theatre hall") and automatic
drawing machines to orchestrions for the Sultan of Constantinople,
numerous instruments are presented here and their special features
elaborated. The production programme is also described.

Orchestrion manufacture is a branch of industry of interest not only
to music lovers and restorers of old instruments but also to social
historians. To facilitate comprehension, the text is extensively
illustrated, with 546 perspective diagrams and photos including 32
colour prints. A special feature of this large-format hardcover are
the outstanding colour photographs.

The author is a master of his subject, his treatise "Mechanische
Musikinstrumente" being now the standard work on mechanical musical
instruments. In the year 2000, Juettemann obtained the Q. David Bowers
Literary Award for his outstanding achievements in the area of
automated music.
