I would like to put a slightly different spin on this discussion.
I personally think that many more rolls would be sold if the companies
selling them did a better job of "advertising", and making it easier
for potential buyers to actually purchase them.
Specifically, I wish more sellers would have web sites -- not only
having a web site, but a _good_ web site. I would describe this as
1. Easy to find.
2. Easy to navigate; some sites out there are so difficult to get
around that it becomes easier to just "move on" to something else.
3. A short description of each roll with a link to "more info".
Some sites end up with pages that are way too long as they try to give
a full description of every roll they sell.
4. A short MIDI file or MPEG (mp3) file so the potential customer can
get idea of what the roll sounds like. (I have too often spent $10-20
on a roll only to play it once because I didn't really like it; this
makes it far less likely to make a purchase if I cannot preview the
roll).
5. Either an order form on-line or a "shopping cart_ to make it easy to
buy. Many people are less likely to order if you have to "email me for
information on how to order" or you have to download a file that needs
to be printed out.
Yes, it may be a lot of work to set up a nice web site (and to maintain
it), but I truly feel more rolls would be sold if it simply was made
easier for buyers. If nothing else, many of are suckers for "click and
order". One possible option would be for sellers to set up an "eBay
Store". The cost to do so is quite minimal and the amount of work
greatly reduced as compared to setting up an ordering system on one's
own web site. With a little extra work, you can do everything I've
suggested via an eBay store, including having links to MIDI or mp3
recordings.
Bottom line: Make it easy for buyers to find you and make it easy for
buyers to actually buy.
