Greetings, Finally I find myself in agreement with Douglas Henderson
on one point. There are quite a few Duo-Art rolls that are over
pedaled. Many in fact that are otherwise fine rolls.
The pedal track on the roll is not an exact recording of the performers
pedaling as the notes are more likely to be (within the resolution and
precision limits of the recording medium and the recording equipment.)
Because of the pneumatic delay, the pedal tracks would have to be
modified from the indications on the marked roll. I have spent
countless hours adjusting the damper adjustments on my Duo-Arts and
have never found a setting that works for all rolls.
Since the editors did such a fine job with most of the classical music
and many of the pops, I do not find it likely that they were just
careless with the pedal and over did it to the point of mush. It seems
more likely that different pianos were used for editing and that the
effect achieved on one with respect to the pedal does not work on all.
Piano size, tone and regulations all require different pedaling to make
the music sound the best.
Since I play my Duo-Art with an electronic interface and MIDI files,
I can change the pedal dwell time and improve rolls that are over or
under pedaled for my piano. I have written a little utility that
stretches or shrinks the pedal on time for all occurrences in a roll.
It works on a batch basis as do all of my MIDI programs so I can sort
files into over and under-pedaled (for my piano)folders and process them
all with little effort.
There are many other aspects of the files that can be adjust as well
but with a well restored and regulated piano there is generally no
need.
Best regards,
