Automatic Shutoff After Roll Rewinds
By Charlie Morgan
This is probably a simple question, but I haven't found the answer
in searching through the MMD Archives or the book by Reblitz. I have
an old automatic reroll assembly, and a automatic shut off assembly.
I understand the reroll assembly is hooked up to and triggered by an
extreme low or high note in the tracker bar (by the perforations at
the end of a roll), but what triggers the automatic shut off assembly
after the roll rewinds?
I read somewhere that it can also be triggered by a hole in the
tracker bar, but wouldn't it get triggered at the same time as the
reroll assembly and just shut off the piano before reroll?
My shutoff assembly is the same pictured at

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[ In a player piano the motor shuts off when the paper leaves
[ the take-up spool and is flapping merrily at the supply spool,
[ but if the roll is to play again ("repeat mode") then the
[ beginning of the roll must somehow be sensed before the ring
[ hook leaves the take-up spool. One popular technique uses
[ a hinged feeler which falls into a groove in the take-up
[ spool as the tapered leader comes off and so shifts the gears
[ into "play" mode. Another method uses a long perforation in
[ a dedicated channel to signal that the roll is rewound back
[ to the beginning. What type of piano or orchestrion are you
[ working on? -- Robbie
