Readers will be saddened by the news that Richard Z. Vance died
yesterday. I was very proud to have known him, and his passing
will leave a big gap in the world of mechanical music.
Richard's enthusiasm, knowledge and attention to detail are almost
unrivaled in my experience and he has enriched my life as a person
and a collector very materially. I will always recall his precision
diagrams often drawn on a napkin or scrap of paper at short notice
just to make a point clear.
He was a welcome visitor to my house on several occasions, when
I often played my Aeolian pipe organ to him, and if he enjoyed it
as much as I enjoyed playing for him, then I will be very proud of
the memory.
