Music Roll Editing Tools
By Spencer Chase

Greetings, I have written a couple of utilities for the purpose of
examining, editing and repairing web lengths in MIDI files.

GapFinder is a windows program that can be used on single files
as well as whole folders of them, in batch mode. A threshold level
(in milliseconds) is set and a log file is created indicating the
files that have gaps below the threshold. A detailed listing may be
produced that lists each note number as well as the time of occurrence.

Another feature is the creation of a file for editing that has the
scale expanded so as to better show the relative duration of events
and gaps in sequencers such as Cakewalk that coarse granularity of
display. Velocity is also changed for notes which occur at close gaps
so that they may be easily found by viewing the velocity display or by
selecting by velocity.

This is the best method of editing the files as a decision can be made
within a musical context. The ability of notes to repeat is determined
by several factors and a strict duration of notes or gaps is not enough
to make an accurate determination if a note will or will not repeat on
a given system. The program can also be set to adjust for acceleration
of the roll in determining the time values. This allows for checking
of files that will or will not be accelerated when played. Once the
modified files are edited, they may be converted back to the original
format by the same program.

GapFixer is a tool I wrote for automatically "fixing" close gaps in
MIDI files. It shortens the trailing end of notes that cause too close
of a gap and can be set to not reduce notes shorter than a specified
duration. It does nothing more than that and can make no musical
decisions. GapFixer processes whole folders of files in batch mode.
Together with the GapFinder, it is possible to identify and fix
problems in many files. Since most perforator formats can be converted
to MIDI and back, these tools can also be used with those formats.

The programs can be downloaded from my web site. These programs were
written for my own use and for the use by a few other people. The
GapFinder program is a Windows program and has a "help" file but the
GapFixer is more of DOS box thing and is not for people expecting
graphics and other fancy things. Limited support will be provided and
bugs may be fixed if time permits. Use at your own risk. The programs
may be found at the following URL, along with some other utilities.
Not much time to provide instructions but most are pretty straight
forward. Limited support will be provided for people who really intend
to use them.
