That's fascinating, but I have a question.  Wouldn't a piano roll that
you'd purchased at the local music store just have plain holes in it,
instead of the alterations mentioned in the post?  Were the rolls
mentioned in the post some special ones that were recovered from the
roll-publishing facility?
