Gottfried Organ Plays QRS "Concert Series" Rolls
By Pete Knobloch
On Sunday I went to a friends home for one of our ATOS meetings to
listen to pipe organ music. John and his father did the restoration
and installation work and the Gottfried organ is a very sweet sounding
instrument.
I had heard that John had a roll player so I asked him if I could
see it. To my surprise, John went to the Gottfried organ console and
reached up under the key bed and pulled out the drawer, which exposed
the player.
The tracker bar is a standard 88-note variety (9 holes per inch) so
I asked if I could see one of the rolls. John pulled out the only
three rolls that he had, one being a standard 88-note roll while the
other two were truly organ rolls. These rolls were very fragile and the
paper fell apart as I unrolled them to see if they had any expression
holes. There are holes punched on the outside edges of the rolls for
controlling the shades and the stops. Both rolls came from QRS and
labeled with "Concert Series" as part of the name. One roll was
labeled "Ava Maria 80993".
I looked in the MMD Archives and couldn't find any information on the
tracker bar scale. Does anyone know what organ console functions are
wired to each of the 88 tracker bar holes? This organ is a 2-manual
pipe organ with full pedal board and about 65 tab stops. And does
anyone punch these old organ rolls?
