Hello All -- Well, in response to Jack Conway's note to this current
thread I thought I would try to help with some info, as it's distressing
for me to hear things like this on projects I was involved with.
The kiosk tune selecting system -- which I did not install -- is
a product of Ragtime Automated Music. Owner Ken Caulkins persuaded
Disneyland to add this system to the Welte orchestrion, although
the system installed was never meant to handle such a device: it was
designed for another purpose.
I warned Disneyland this would not work and they should not do it, but
Ken convinced them he could make it work. From what I understand, it
failed from day one and Ragtime would not service it, and the Arcade
Department at Disneyland was also clueless as what to do. As we all,
know when hands get into machines that they know nothing about, they
mess things up; probably the switching devices which control various
sets of pipes have had wires cut. I have gone to the park to service
the instrument only to find that parts had been "borrowed" to use for
something else, thus disabling functions -- which could explain the
orchestrion being so "quiet".
The MIDI operation disk I programmed sends a signal to start the blower
30 seconds before the program starts to play. This allows the blower
to fill the organs reservoir before the program starts. As Jack said,
the music program started right away but the wind came up later. As I
said, the Ragtime system is not designed to run my system.
All I can say is: complain to Guest Relations at Disneyland City Hall
-- if they get enough complaints they will call me to come fix things,
as the squeaky wheel gets the grease! If they would just leave things
alone they would work fine. The Welte Orchestrion never missed a beat
for four years until this kiosk was attached, and then it was nothing
but out-of-order all the time.
