Welte Concert Orchestrion at Disneyland
By Jack M. Conway

Hi Group, I spent several days at Disneyland last month. The Welte
Concert Orchestrion was the biggest disappointment there. I went
to the park the second day that it was opened and enjoyed mechanical
music instruments scattered throughout the park. When I visited
about five years ago the Welte was not playing and the only instrument
I could find was a Universal that could not be heard a foot away.
It is gone and the Welte seems to be the only instrument left.

A pleasant and helpful cast member showed how to operate the touch
screen. I deposited my quarter, selected a music category, then
selected a march. It sounded as if the MIDI file started immediately
but the remote pump slowly came up to speed, causing part of the tune
to miss and then barely play. It then reached maximum playing volume,
which I would guess is 1/10 to 1/4 of the designed playing volume.
I went back another day and chose a different tune. I got the same
result.

Anyone familiar with a roll operated instrument would recognize the
continuous loop roll was not playing the instrument, as it is torn
on both edges.

Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm were a big factor in wanting to
collect mechanical music instruments. I have not been to Knott's
in 30 years, but I understand from others that the band organs and
nickelodeons that took every coin I had with me are all gone also.
