Music Roll Artists Don't Get Enough Credit
By Don Teach
I am most irritated by the books on past pianists. Whenever I see
a book about great pianist of the past they tend to overlook the piano
roll as a means of recording. I hope everyone realizes that whoever
made music that is on your piano roll that some talented artist is
behind that music. I wish I had more biographical information on the
artist and what they played. If you are reading this and have some
information then please pass it on in an article for the MMDigest.
The term multitracking is in common use in recording studios today.
The piano rolls were really the first multitracked recordings, yet they
never get credit for inventing multitracking. Generally the recordings
of Les Paul are given credit as the first multitracked recordings.
If you think of a piano roll as having been multitracked, instead of
"Oh, no one could have played that, there are too many notes being
played," then it puts a whole new light on the great recordings of the
past made on piano rolls.
