Seek Player Piano for Nancarrow Concert
By Jonathan Fisher

We are organizing a contemporary music event that will be held at
the Slought Foundation in Philadelphia. The event will consist of
player-piano performances of some of the player piano studies of
Conlon Nancarrow as well as transcriptions of those pieces for piano
4-hands at the same piano. The date is June 18th, 2004.

The organization, Slought Foundation, is a young non-profit
organization engaging contemporary art through a variety of projects
such as this event, contemporary exhibitions about conceptual art,
and with a significant Internet presence (http://slought.org/).

Their past projects span composers and performers as diverse as
Subotnick, Brown, Coltrane, Cage, Sunny Murray and Miroslav Vitous,
and they are organizing a number of upcoming live concerts this summer
including one with Ligeti's son Lukas. An early preview of our
project, "Transcribing Nancarrow", is available at the Slought
Foundation web site here: http://slought.org/content/11185/

However, we are still trying to find a player piano for the event.
While we have obtained the player piano rolls for these pieces from
Wolfgang Heisig, we realize that finding a roll-playing piano for the
event may be difficult, so we are also open to using MIDI-capable
player pianos and using the MIDI files (which we are obtaining from
Kyle Gann).

We are basically looking for someone to possibly collaborate with
us in the form of loaning and operating the piano. Whereas Slought
Foundation does not receive public or private grant money, and is
funded entirely by the curators themselves at considerable hardship,
they have limited financial resources. The email lists however do
reach a few thousand individuals in the arts community, however,
and the web site, which includes about 160 hours of audio archives,
available for free, is accessed by about 50,000 different people
each year.

Sincerely,
Jonathan Fisher
