Some years ago I was called by Steinway Hall to evaluate a Steinway
player grand piano located on Central Park west in New York City.
I called the owner to make an appointment and she described the piano
as having a drawer. I was taken aback by this and was intensely
curious to see just what it was.
As I entered the huge apartment, exquisitely furnished, there in
the corner was a gorgeous Louie XV model M Steinway. Upon further
inspection, it was indeed a Duo-Art. The tracker bar was Duo-Art,
the rest of the drawer was Ampico. Underneath, the expression box had
these really neat fan type accordions and all the other usual DA stuff.
The serial number placed it at 1936. I didn't get the restoration,
sadly, but it was a treat to see.
My suspicion is that these were custom built to order after the merger.
The case was _not_ elongated. I'm sure that as the popularity of
players waned, Steinway was not going to waste time and money making
special cases for a custom Duo-Art, since Ampico was installing them
in regular sized pianos from the getgo.
I suspect they just didn't go with a full Ampico was a space
consideration. Duo-Art, just the one expression box, Ampico all the
separate expression devices. That piano would have been a real jewel
in any collection.
