I'm pleased to report that the redoubtable Ken Caswell and Prof. Karl
Miller, of the University of Texas in Austin, have "done it again" with
another CD transfer on the Feurich Welte, continuing their series of
historically-important roll recordings from the Welte-Mignon and
"Licensee" catalogs.
Pierian 0018 is now available, and consists of the eight selections
recorded on the Welte-Mignon by the Russian composer, Alexander
Scriabin. Messrs. Welte and Bockisch took their apparatus to Moscow
in 1910 and recorded, as well, some of the well-known composers and
pianists of the time; two selections by Constantine Igumnoff and
Alexander Goldenweiser are included. In addition, the celebrated Josef
Lhevinne plays the popular Nocturne for the Left Hand. Six pieces are
played by the American pianist Austin Conradi, including four of the
Preludes, Op. 11; Leff Pouishnoff, the Russian emigre artist and the
French pianist Magdaleine Brard are also represented with additional
selections from their Welte-Mignon "Licensee" sessions from 1925/6.
As always with these issues, the sound is exemplary as are the
graphics, including pictures of the artist; a reproduction of a
Scriabin commentary by the late Harold Schonberg, and brief notes on
the artists add to the attractiveness of this newest in the ongoing
series. To come, says Ken, will be the recordings of Teresa Carreno
and a special edition of Ottorino Respighi's only known recording,
a four-hands version of his tone poem "The Fountains of Rome" with
Alfredo Casella as partner. Additional recordings made by Casella
of his own work will be included, as well. Announcement of their
availability will appear in these pages when appropriate.
The Reproducing Piano Roll Foundation is pleased to note these
outstanding recordings, which are available from Amazon.com. Consult
their descriptive listings for complete content details.
