With profound sadness we mourn the death of Marion Roehl who died
of complications as a result of open heart surgery. In 2003, Marion
celebrated her 80th birthday at an East Coast Chapter meeting.
It seemed that both Marion and her late husband Harvey had a keen
interest in everything -- but especially mechanical music. They
were longtime supporters of the Musical Box Society International.
Harvey was MBSI President in 1968-1969 and was an MBSI trustee advisor
at the time of his passing in June, 2000. In Harvey's name, the Roehl
Ambassador Award was created by MBSI to honor those who actively
promote the field of mechanical music.
It is said that among the most important things one does in his or her
lifetime is to teach and help others. Beyond their successful Vestal
Press publishing business where one could purchase books and learn
about mechanical music, Harvey and Marion were quick to lend a helping
hand and could be counted on to give sound advice and encouragement
whenever needed. They were regular participants at MBSI band organ
rallies, chapter meetings, and conventions.
Though Harvey's wit, humor, knowledge and musical talent tended to
overshadow Marion's presence, she was a partner in everything Harvey
accomplished. She shared all but was very much her own person with
a great sense of humor and constant smile. She seemed to exude an
infectious enthusiasm for life. We have lost a wonderful friend whose
presence here made life a little better, a little sunnier, and a lot
more interesting.
On behalf of the Musical Box Society International, our condolences
go out to Marion's family and her many, many friends.
