Hi everyone -
I, too, hate spam. Don't ask what I'd do to a spammer if I ever
dug one out of his dark, slimey hole. I offer one possible solution
to Robbie's spam problem. This solution is used in many newsgroups
that have similar problems. In the newsgroup, legitimate posters
put the initials of the newgroup at the beginning of the subject
line. For instance, postings in "alt.stories.fiction" would be
prefaced with "ASF", then the subject, like:
"ASF Anyone read the new Stephen King book yet?"
So, if, in order to post, everyone simply put "MMD" at the beginning of
the subject line of all emails to rolls@foxtail.com, Robbie could
sort by subject, or maybe even set up a filter to automatically delete
any email that did NOT include "MMD" in the title.
Yes, some people might forget, and have to repost when they didn't see
their article posted the next day, but I believe it would enormously
reduce the burden on the editors of the list.
Thank you.
Bill Mackin
[ This is a really interesting idea. I'm not sure I'm ready to
[ require it, but I'd be really intersted to see if people would
[ give it a try for a while. I am currently evaluating a mechanism
[ that sends back a request for confirmation. In the long run, that
[ mechanism may be the way to go. I'm interested in other's comments
[ on the problem. Please try preceding your actual subject with MMD
[ and we'll see if it helps. Thanks! --Jody
