Mechanical Music in the Movies - "Dr. Jekyll"
By Claudine Jones

I was just watching the 1941 Spencer Tracy movie version of "Dr. Jekyll
and Mr. Hyde" and thought it quite charming that his lovely fiancee,
Lana Turner(!) quite casually saunters over to a large table model
cylinder box in her music room and sets it playing as though it were
the most natural thing in the world...

Of course, the music itself is gussied up, but at least gives some
of the quality one would expect from such a machine. Too bad they
couldn't take the time to let us have a good long close-up of the works,
but they had a story to tell. :-)
