With respect to Albert Petrak's thread on duo pianist recordings,
I want to remind readers of the fairly well known photo of Ernest
Schelling on page 184 of the large Duo-Art Catalogue first published
in 1927. It shows a profile of Schelling seated at a grand piano,
that may or may not be a player; since the music desk is slid forward,
one cannot tell for sure.
However, in the background there is a second grand piano that appears
to be a player since there is a white area in the photo where the spool
box would be. Even more tantalizing is that pushed up to this second
piano is what is unmistakably an Aeolian Pianola. Exactly how this was
used is a subject ripe for speculation.
The final bit of this puzzle is that Schelling never made -- or possibly
never released -- any four-hand rolls, so it would appear that this
second piano and Pianola were set up for somebody else. I will scan
this photo and email it so it can be in the MMD archives.
Incidentally, does anyone remember reading a paragraph or two on the
recording by Harold Bauer and Ossip Gabrilowitch of the Arensky Valse
for Two Pianos? I thought it was in the 1927 Catalogue, but I was
unable to find it. Perhaps it was in another catalogue or possibly
an AMICA article from years ago. Any help would be appreciated.
