Dates of Ampico Piano Roll Recording Sessions
By Mike Walter
Dr. Gregory Mason has recently requested information about the
recording sessions of pianist Ossip Gabrilowitsch.
I have a photocopy of the Ampico Recording Artist Contract Book and,
unfortunately, it does not list his name, although Mr. Gabrilowitsch
did record four pieces on six rolls. This might indicate that he
did not have a contract with Ampico and only recorded these pieces
as a two-shot deal.
It seems that Gabrilowitsch made the first two recordings (Bourree by
Bach and Gavotte by Glazounow) shortly after he completed a four-year
concert tour in the USA and Europe (1916), and then ten years later he
recorded the Fantasie (Schumann) and Nocturne (Tchaikovsky) in 1926.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
