Ref. the letter from Dean Smith in 031229 MMDigest. We too have
a calliope (and a band organ) in a trailer. For the last several
weeks we have been trying to locate a company to provide public
liability insurance on the unit.
Our regular agent tells us that the unit is covered as long as
it is coupled to the truck and we accept no more than $100 in
return for playing. Should we uncouple and/or accept more than
$100, we are on our own, as then it would fall under 'commercial'
regulations and our insurance company does not cover commercial
situations. He has been unable to find another source for
coverage. Incidentally, we have had all our insurance, home
owners, auto, etc., with him for almost 40 years.
I have contacted nearly every agency in the Yellow Pages and
I always receive essentially the same story for liability
coverage. To make matters even worse, a local businessman, who
has been a very generous sponsor, is insisting that we have such
coverage.
I am open to any suggestions. What do others with trailered
instruments do?
Thank-you & Happy New Year to All
