Hello, MMD friends: I have an LP issued by Major Records in 1958,
entitled "Authentic Carousel Music." I bet it is the same LP that
Dan Robinson has a tape of. The organ playing the Style 165 music roll
is the Ruth model 38 at the Crescent Park Carousel at East Providence,
Rhodes Island.
I think it is a lovely organ, but it is playing well below par every
time I have ever heard it. It is usually missing notes, the bell
register does not play very strongly, and the tempo is usually at warp
speed. That is how it sounds on this LP, as I recall, which shows that
it apparently has not deteriorated since 1958. However, I am sure that
if the Carousel Park Commission in East Providence wanted to spend the
money, it could be a good deal better.
On my LP the organ is playing tunes from Wurlitzer roll number 6698,
including "I Never See Maggie Alone", "Whispering Hope", "Room Full
Of Roses", "I Can Dream, Can't I", "Wildwood", and "Hop-Scotch Polka
(Scotch Hot)", as well as two other tunes (I don't have the LP in front
of me right now). I don't believe either of the rolls that these
selections came from (6698 or the other roll) still exist at Crescent
Park, although TRT originals and recuts do exist.
There is no mention of the organ's identity on the liner notes, but
I am sure of its identity from its distinctive sound: very stringy.
Happy Holidays to all,
Mark S. Chester
