BBC Radio Programme About the Player Piano
By Julian Dyer
The player piano got a rare airing on BBC radio 4 today, taking a
30-minute overview of the instrument starting with a Boesendorfer SE,
backtracking to the player and reproducing piano. It's a journalist's
take on things, presenting the instrument as a key factor in musical
and technical developments of its day that are still relevant to ours.
The case is made fairly convincingly, possibly (or not) aided by a few
sound bites from yours truly. How nice to find that the player piano is
still capable of raising such an enthusiastic reaction that a radio
producer wants to make a programme about it!
MMDers can pick up this program via the BBC web site until next
