Power Supply for Welte-Mignon 110V DC Motor
By Ellsworth Johnson

I agree with Robbie's statement herewith and following is why I agree --

[ My statement stands if a bridge rectifier of four diodes is used
[ alone, with no other components. A ripple filter following the
[ rectifier is not needed since the inductance of the motor windings
[ significantly reduces the 120 Hz ripple current.

The only way you would achieve more than 120 volts dc is by placing
a large capacitor (many microfarads) at the output of the bridge
rectifier. Bear in mind that the input voltage is alternating between
zero and 170 volts, and the RMS or average voltage will be 120 volts
at the output of the bridge rectifier.

Engineering-wise you can do some clever things when converting AC
to DC, and you can actually build a circuit that will double or even
triple the voltage output of the DC. This is often taken advantage of
when designing power supplies for various electronic equipment.
