I, too, have a German musical Christmas tree stand and it, too, has
an extra hole in the dome. The hole in mine is certainly not for
adding water, as it would flood the motor and movement.
However, I have seen an illustration of a stand like mine with a column
holding three tuned bells, each with a hammer. I suggest that the
domes are standard pressings used in both the standard model and the
deluxe "with bells" models. I would add that a container for water
ballast would be very useful, as the stands are not too stable!
