Greetings, I have one of the Moog PianoBars that I bought with the
goal of recording the behavior characteristics of various reproducing
pianos. Although it appears to be a well-made device and may be well
suited to the recording of hand played piano, there are a couple of
reasons that it might not work very well for recording piano roll
performances.
I am currently awaiting a new version of the system firmware that may
solve some of the problems but I still have my doubts that it will ever
record dynamics properly. In addition, it does not seem to record
rapidly repeated notes properly in many cases.
The pedals are recorded from the motion of the pedals themselves which
do not move on pneumatic playing. A modified pedal sensor would need to
be made to capture this data. These problems may be solved in time but
for now, it is very disappointing.
If anyone is interested in trying to use the PianoBar for recording
piano roll performances, I would suggest arranging a reasonable trial
period prior to purchase.
If anyone is interested, I will write a more detailed letter about the
limitations of the system. I am actually surprised the Moog is targeting
this application as they are well aware of the problems I am having.
Best regards,
