I have been following the mail regarding the correct procedure to care
for Stella discs and have some information that has not been addressed
before. I have an oiler that came with my machine and furnished by the
manufacturer. Attached is a picture of it. It is a can 3" wide by
2-1/4" tall with felt "stamper" pad that contains the oil to be rubbed
on the disc. I have used 20W motor oil on my discs, being sure to wipe
off the excess vigorously.
Directions on the back of the can read: "The under side of tune sheets
is slightly oiled before shipment, but when thorough the action of the
atmosphere and use of the instrument, the tune sheets become dry a
crackling noise is produced in playing, this will disappear if the
under side of the tune sheet is slightly oiled by means of this pad,
which should be kept saturated with music box oil."
I have oiled my disc only once in the last year and there is still some
oil on them. Hope this helps fellow MMDers.
Respectfully,
Lelland Fletcher, San Diego, Calif.
