CD "Paderewski in Recital" by Pianola Institute
By Albert Petrak

To all: You will be pleased to know about the new 2-CD set of
virtually all the Duo-Art rolls recorded by the cherishable Polish
pianist, Ignacy Jan Paderewski. It was, in some respects, a labor
of love for Denis Hall, who contributed the Duo-Art transfers to the
recent complete issue of the roll recordings of Maurice Ravel (the
balance, those for Welte) (Pierian #13).

The recording is issued under the aegis of the Pianola Institute in
the U.K., in collaboration with the Paderewski Museum in Morges,
Switzerland, which happens to be in Paderewski's home. Denis recorded
them on his Hamburg Steinway "O" (equivalent to the American "XR"
medium grand), and they are a very faithful rendering of the
characteristics of that piano, sounding very much like what one hears
in his/her own parlor. It is a most impressive achievement and
contains these DA rolls:

DUO-ART

6097 Chopin - Etude, Op. 25, No. 9, Gb "Butterfly"
6100 Paderewski - Minuet, Op. 14, No. 1, G
6551 Chopin - Waltz, Op. 34, No. 1, Ab
6558 Paderewski - Caprice (Genre Scarlatti) Op. 14, No. 3, G
6562 Paderewski - Nocturne, Op. 16, No. 4, Bb

6567 Chopin-Liszt - "Polish Songs", Op. 74, No. 5: My Joys
6569 Mendelssohn - Spinning Song, Op. 67, No. 4, C
     (Songs Without Words) (Also: A-23)
6594 Chopin-Liszt - "Polish Songs", Op. 74, No. 1: The Maiden's Wish
6618 Chopin - Waltz, Op. 42, Ab
6670 Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, C#
6681 Paderewski - "Chants Du Voyageur" (Traveler's Songs), Op. 8, No. 3:
     Melodie (Also: A-24)
6694 Schubert-Liszt - Hark, Hark! The Lark! (Also: A-71)
6794 Schubert - Impromptu, Op. 142, No. 2, Ab

6809 Chopin - Mazurka, Op. 17, No. 4, A
6847 Chopin - Nocturne, Op. 37, No. 2, G (Also: A-45)
6929 Beethoven - Piano Sonata, Op. 27, No. 2, C# "Moonlight" 1st and 2nd

6930 Beethoven - Piano Sonata, Op. 27, No. 2, C# "Moonlight" 3rd Mvt.
7160 Chopin - Scherzo No. 3, Op. 39, C#
7186 Debussy - Images, Series 1, No. 1: Reflets Dans L'eau
     (Reflections In The Water)
7215 Schelling - Nocturne (Ragusa)
7262 Schumann - Nachtstueck (Nocturne) Op. 23, No. 4, F
7285 Paderewski - Legende, Op. 16, No. 1, Ab
7348 Schubert - Impromptu, Op. 142, No. 3, Bb "Rosamunde"
7435 Schubert-Liszt - Soirees De Viennes (Evenings In Vienna): No. 6, A
7446 Paderewski - Cracovienne Fantastique, Op. 14, No. 6
7509 Liszt - "Paganini" Etude No. 3, G#: La Campanella
7510 Schubert-Liszt - Reissue Of #7435
8008 Chopin - Ballade No. 1, Op. 23, G

In all, five rolls had to be omitted, from space considerations.
They are
6140 Chopin "Military" Polonaise, Op. 40;
6568 Liszt - "Hungarian" Rhapsody No. 10, E, and
7508 Wagner-Liszt - "Liebestod" from the Opera "Tristan und Isolde".

In addition to these domestic issues, two of the three recordings
issued by the late Gordon Iles, one-time editor of the Aeolian Co.,
LTD, also were dropped. They are

Artona 8020 - Schumann - Bird as Prophet, Op. 82, No. 7 and
Artona 8022 - Chopin - Etude, Op. 10, No. 5, Gb "Black Key."

This is to advise you that Denis Hall and Rex Lawson, visiting the U.S.
earlier this month, stopped off in Chicago at the Polish Roman Catholic
Union of America to arrange for an American availability of the set,
which they accomplished. The curator, Rich Kujawa, has been kind
enough to accept orders which would originate from members of the MMD
as follows:

$25.00 plus $2.00 for postage, send check or money order, or by credit
card coupled with a phone call, to Rich Kujawa <rkujawa@prcuofa.org>
at the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America, at 984 N. Milwaukee
Ave., Chicago, IL 60622-4101. They have a goodly supply so your order
should be processed timely.

Rich further advises: The Museum's web address is http://pma.prcua.org/
Once at the home page, I suggest you go to the "Museum Map" and click
on the Paderewski Room diagram. You can then get an idea of the scope
of this collection. You can also go to the Gift Shop page where you
will see the Paderewski CD set prominently advertised. The CD set may
be purchased by mail with a check or by credit card.

Those who are curious about Paderewski may also wish to visit the
Museum. I am the curator of the collection and for those visitors who
are interested, I present some highlights of Paderewski's life during
the visit. Visitors usually find this very interesting. For example,
Paderewski introduced the cultivation of the Zinfandel grape to
California and produced the first California Zinfandel wine at his
ranch there. I am available for tours during our normal hours but not
on weekends. You may call me during the week at (773) 384 3352 ext. 206.

I hope this information will be of use and I urge you to obtain the
set. It is very pleasant listening, either intently for detail of his
interpretations or just casual attention.
