Listen to the Music
By Spencer Chase

[ Re 031119 MMDigest "Editing and Expression Coding for Disklavier"

Greetings, The best part of Richard W. Carlson's article is the
last line, "I only wish people would listen to the music and not just
the machines."

It is too bad that so few people actually listen to these instruments.

The editors of the past had the very same job that one has today, but
with different tools available. A recording made and edited then is
not much different from one made today in terms of authenticity. They
both started out with a recording of the notes as played and recorded
as accurately as their system allowed, and from there it was a matter
of making it musical.

In many cases, the editors of reproducing rolls produced very musical
results. Probably the best examples are the result of close
involvement of the artists in the editing process.

To judge these performances, today, by standards that they can not
meet is neither fair nor rewarding.

To rebuild a reproducing system to the best of your ability and
enjoy the music as it was intended to be heard is amazing indeed.
By "listen," I do mean listen completely, not as background music.

Best regards,
Spencer Chase
