Converting Instruments to Play Different Media
By Howard Sanford

Hi MMDers! Amidst all the controversy on MMD over traditional roll or
book music vs. MIDI files, I would like to report on my third MIDI-fied
instrument. I have just completed installing the Chase-Gerety E-roll
system on a 1925 Weber Duo-Art grand piano. I couldn't be more pleased
with the results.

The hardware was relatively simple although tedious to install,
requiring installing tees in the tubing for about 88 or 90 of the
miniature valves supplied with the system. The software also was
simple to install on the computer, with intermittent help from both
Spencer Chase and Gene Gerety. They were very cooperative and generous
with their time in aiding the installation.

The results are phenomenal. I can play any of about 400 rolls with
just two or three clicks of the mouse and, of course, the selections
play with the intended Duo-Art expression. The system saves wear and
tear on the rolls, gives me a wide selection of tunes at low cost, and
allows me to change a "roll" very quickly with three or four mouse
clicks. I mentioned I have 400 "rolls" or tunes but many more are
available, I think over 1000, from Spencer Chase.

I can play a roll in the traditional manner anytime by just removing a
piece of tape covering the tracker bar. It's a great innovative system!
