Mills Violano Roll Tracking Problems
By Hal Davis
The Mills rolls are very particular as to the edge spacing on both
sides. I've seen some recut rolls that had the correct spacing but
were too close to the edge of the paper on one side and too far away
on the other.
I believe the .114" spacing is correct and the other several hundred
thousandths of an inch would make little if any difference. I've had
Violano rolls that expanded more than that and still played okay.
If the edge margins are cut the proper distance in, then it would
require re-adjustment of the Mills roll frame to play recut rolls,
and another re-adjustment back to play Mills-made rolls again.
There used to be a couple of fellows in California who made copies of
rolls for the Violanos, and the ones that I saw all were slightly the
wrong distance from the edge of the paper but could be made to play on
the machines.
The other problem I've run into with recut Violano rolls is that
the perforations seem to weave slightly from side to side so that if
adjusted properly at the beginning of the roll they are then off to
one side down the roll a way.
Not all "recut" rolls are good quality work. Caveat Emptor!

[ The music holes are always centered when the paper is trimmed with
[ trimming punches in line with the note punches. Paper trimmed
[ externally to the main punch and die can wander back and forth.
