For whatever shape this instrument is in, $250.00 is an excellent price
being an Ampico. Most old pumper players out there can be had for $200
or less depending on where you live and the party selling it. Sometimes
much less, or even free, for that matter, if you agree to move it.
An Ampico is a different animal however. These instruments are
disappearing faster than we sometimes care to admit. Most piano techs
are not interested, music stores hate them. That only leaves antique
dealers who have already had enough experiences with old pianos sitting
around. What few remain in homes have often been tinkered with to the
point that significant damage has been done making future restoration
much more difficult.
Ampico pianos in whatever condition deserve a second chance. If possible
they need to be saved before they are in the hands of a butcher or in a
land fill. If you are able to store this piano for an extended time,
then take heart that you are doing mechanical history a great favor.
If not, it would be commendable to locate someone else who is willing
to take on the responsibility of caring or at least storing this
endangered species.
