Value of Unrestored Ampico Upright
By Bryan Cather

Damon, in reference to the inexpensive unrestored Ampico, I'd pass
on it. It sounds like there's enough "dead" on it that there are,
more likely than not, other unseen problems which would make
restoration virtually impossible.

Judging from the condition as explained, I wouldn't be surprised if
the beast had major lamination separations in the pinblock, which would
render it untunable. Granted, theoretically you _could_ replace the
pinblock in an upright, but it's an onerous job! I'd let this one pass
and, once your life settles out and you've both the place and the time
to restore one properly, _then_ begin looking at that "dream piano".
