Ragtimer Johnny Maddox
By Barry Dennis

When I was growing up in the 1960s I heard my first Johnny Maddox LP
and enjoyed it thoroughly. I then managed to purchase almost every one
of his LPs (on the DOT record label), and have them all to this date.

In the mid 1970s, when I was living in Great Falls, Montana, I saw an
advertisement for Johnny Maddox who was then performing in a nearby
hotel lounge. I went to see him and obtained his autograph on one of
his LP record jackets which I had purchased years earlier.

When I spoke with him that evening, I invited him for dinner later on
that week, and he accepted. We had a wonderful evening talking about
ragtime and his experiences, and I was very glad to have had the
opportunity to speak with him.
