A MIDI system via computer in our player pianos is very tempting.
Programming the piano to play multiple rolls, and not having to get up
from one's chair to change the roll; perfect for one's old age perhaps.
But, and this is a big but, I would miss my old piano rolls, the boxes,
their musty smell, and all the history that goes with it. I would miss
the mechanical sound of my Ampico as it softly huffs and puffs, and
watching the roll recreate musical history for me. I also like the idea
of taking part with the musical performance when pedalling my Grunert
upright.
Let's thank the people who still take the time and effort to make new
rolls for us. After all isn't what this group is all about,
'mechanical music?'
