Removing the Musty Smell from Music Rolls
By Jon Miller
I recently received an inquiry asking me if I knew of any way to
eliminate the musty smell from piano rolls and boxes. I did not have
any good suggestions for him. I later received an email from him
telling me what he had come up with. I thought I would share this with
everyone here. Text of that email follows.

"I happened to find an advertising handout in my office about
eliminating odors in homes; I am a real estate agent. Anyway, it
turned out to be an ozone generator. I was able to get it on trial
and have tried it on my rolls. I am pleased with the results. My wife
also told me that she can not smell the odor either. Some of the boxes
had had mold on them that the seller tried to clean off with Lysol.
When they arrived in the mail, I could smell the mold smell as I took
them out of the boxes.
"I also talked with a museum conserver of paper documents and he told
me that he puts documents in a Sterilite plastic container with charcoal
or kitty litter. This seems to work for him. I have not tried this,
since the Ozone generator seems to have worked for me.
"The elimination of the smell seems to be lasting so far."
