Thanks for the response to my query regarding "Piping Rock" by J.
Fred Coots. One attached paragraph is certainly better than nothing.
It seems that nearly everyone on this list must know about the
above-mentioned book or have one, except me! Does anyone know where
I can obtain a copy of the "Hot Recut Piano-Rollography" by Richard
L. Riley?
The only information I have about this man is that he made several
recut piano rolls under the label "Jazz Classics" in the 1980s and
early '90s, but as far as I can guess, that label is defunct and
the recuts are extremely scarce. I have also heard that Mr. Mike
Schwimmer made some excellent recuts around this time, but I have
no idea what label they were issued under.
I will say, however, that If you want great, accurate recuts of
excellent, hot, ragtime, blues, stride, and a few novelties, the
main source is BluesTone music rolls. Their web site is:
http://www.bluesrolls.com/ .
Though I do not personally own any of their recuts (yet), a friend
in the area has several, and I had an opportunity to try them out on
their piano. I will say that if you are looking for copies of James
P. Johnson's hot blues, song, and stride rolls, or possibly some of
Charley Straight's extremely rare unpublished rags, this is the place
to get them!
Thanks for any help,
Andrew Barrett
