I am contemplating the construction of airflow measurement devices
to aid me in my restoration of player pianos. Various articles in
the MMD Archives indicate that this has been done by others.
In order not to reinvent the wheel, would anyone be willing to
share what they have done with me? I have sent an email to Phil
Dayson but have not had a reply yet.
My background is industrial fluid power so I would lean toward the
flow meter & pressure (vacuum) gage approach but am willing to go
in any direction. I am now retired and the engineer in me wants
to measure these things.
1. Measurements seem to be given in cubic inches per minute.
Is this at 10 in. W.C.?
2. What are acceptable leak rates for a pouch, Ampico valve,
Ampico (1/2) stack, etc.
3. Does everybody who measures flow get the same readings for
a given hole size?
4. Has anybody got sample orifices for calibration?
I have rebuilt about 10 players and one Duo-Art over the years and
have had good luck. I have acquired an Fischer Ampico grand that
I am planning to keep and now have the luxury of time to do it right.
