[ Marc Goodman, in MMD 031008, asked about "Texas Fox Trot"
I, too have this roll. Several years ago, I did a lecture-recital
at the local history museum where I asked all the then-current roll
producers to recommend one roll from their catalog which exemplified
the type or roll they put out. In the process, I obtained catalogs
from all the suppliers.
Eric Bernhoft sent a copy of "Texas Fox Trot", which I got curious
about after finding it to be quite enjoyable. It turns out that
"Texas Fox Trot" was the first published piece by West Texas composer
David Guion, who later went on to bigger and better things; for
example, the most common orchestral arrangement of "Home on the Range"
is his.
In more direct reply to Marc's comments, Eric is to my knowledge no
longer making rolls. His arrangements were quite good, most all of
them of the traditional ragtime/early jazz variety. They were
perforated by Custom Music Rolls; perhaps Janet or Richard Tonnesen
can comment on this better than I. Incidentally, these rolls were not
cheap when new. Part of the cost was the custom boxes: if you look
carefully, the Upright and Grand logo is embossed into the black paper
cover, much like some of the early QRS, Connorized, and US Music Co.
boxes were.
