Today I brought home a Gem Roller Organ with 13 cobs. The metal
hardware works properly. That is, turns the cob and the pins on the
cob open and close the pallet valves. However, there is no sound.
Before I can determine what the problem could be I need to know more
about how this little "gem" works.
1. Does the top (reservoir?) actually move up and down as the vacuum
is created in this chamber?
2. Looking at the bottom of the organ there is a "rocking" bellows
that rocks back and forth as the handle is cranked. Where does the air
get expelled from these bellows? There are two patches, one on either
side; on these bellows and these patches (for lack of a better word)
have been taped in place with clear tape (like Scotch tape). Tape has
pulled loose on one side and as the bellows operate air comes out this
opening. If the rocking bellows create a vacuum in the upper chamber
then the air they blow out must exit somewhere. But where?
3. The cloth material on the upper chamber has small holes in the
corners, and probably very porous all across the back. This material
will need to be replaced and when I bought this roller organ the seller
gave me a piece of material which he purchased to replace all the
fabric and bellows. It is maroon on its color side. How do I remove
the old fabric?
4. Inside the roller organ there is a wooden rod that comes up from
the bottom through the floor of the upper chamber. It has a spring on
it. What does the wooden rod do?
Thanks for reading my questions. I appreciate all who can offer help.
Thanks
