Ampico Rolls Played By Nicolai Orloff
By Bob Taylor
In Albert Petrak's posting of 030914, there is some confusion about
Ampico rolls made by Nicolai Orloff. First, it should be noted that
the numbers used in that posting have all been truncated by omitting
the last digit, which is the roll size indicator. Additionally, most
Ampico rolls also use a letter suffix to indicate the price. I'll use
the full identifier in my remarks.
The confusion over roll 57275-H can be clarified easily. The data base
used by Mr. Petrak has an obvious typographic error. The Orloff roll
in question is really 67271-H. The roll 57275-H is indeed Rachmaninoff
playing his "Polka de W. R." recorded some seven years before Orloff
made his debut in the United States.
The Orloff Ampico recordings are all superb. The famous Hickman
spark chronograph recording system came into use about the time Orloff
started making his rolls. That system was used to make the late
classical "A" coded rolls as well as all classical "B" rolls that
followed.
