I don't remember the details about Wurlitzer hole spacing. It was an
engineering mistake. It was supposed to be "X" number of holes to the
inch. They used the pitch of a gear or root of a gear that caused the
mistake (I don't remember which one). It was based on rack and pinion
gear calculation. Maytag washing machines had the same mistake in
their product as well as several other manufacturers. Perhaps one of
the engineers in MMD group can shed some light.

[ I dunno, Don; the tale of the gear error seems like folklore to me.
[ Unless convincing evidence is found, such as a reliable interview
[ with the engineer responsible for the product, all we can do is
[ speculate. The "foot of Lahr" theory is also speculation, as are
[ the theories of the Welte-Mignon recording process. No matter how
[ plausible they sound, they're still theories until some sort of
[ confirming document turns up, preferably written by Edwin Welte
[ or Farney Wurlitzer. -- Robbie
