In 1961, I visited the factory of Vicente Llinares in Barcelona and
watched the construction of the small barrel pianos which seemed to
be outside every doorway of every gift shop in Spain.
I ordered a piano to be sent to the US. He suggested the model that
would play the spirally pinned barrels. I ordered two barrels with
selections that I chose from an extensive list. The piano arrived
two months later in a wooden crate at the port of Houston, Texas.
The customs agents were so fascinated with the piano and its sound
that I did not have to pay any duty.
Llinares made three standard models, and all of this is explained on
my web site at http://www.edgaida.com/faven1.html
Most of the instruments sold in the USA came from an importing company
in New York City. The US version has a label pasted inside the upper
lid with the tuning scale on it. You will also find the name of the
company that imported them.
Electric models are quite common and should include a cart, a stuffed
horse and a figure which appears to turn the crank. Those models were
shipped with two cranks: one for electric play in the hand of the
figure, and a longer crank for hand turning.
Models that play the spirally tuned barrels will play the regular
6-tune barrel _if_ you set the tune selector indicator on number three.
If it is on any other number, the piano plays garbage.
