Hello from me again, I received quite a lot of emails from various
people after my plea for the Liszt 'Annees de Pelerinage' Hupfeld
roll. Many thanks for your response!
It seems to me (and at least one person, Julian Dyer, agrees with me)
that nobody (maybe just in the UK?) knows what they have in their
collections. Boxes and boxes of rolls left in attics or cupboards,
uncatalogued and neglected, seems to be the rule of thumb, the quantity
of rolls seeming to be the main point of the collection.
I know that we have all had the experience in the past of having to buy
a box of 50 rolls in order to get maybe two or three that we really
wanted, but at the end of the day there is no excuse for neglecting the
rest because they did not suit our particular musical taste at the
time.
Original piano rolls now can be 70 or 80 years old, and reflect the
musical tastes of the time, and as such should (whatever the content)
be treated with some degree of respect, perhaps if only for historical
reasons.
I am not suggesting that everybody should sit down at the computer and
start making data base lists, a pretty boring and labourious task at
best, but at least if people could get some rough idea of what is
actually in their collections it would help maybe even the hoarders
to get rid of stuff they did not want.
Best wishes
Tony Dellaway
