Repairing Musical Box Comb With Solder
By David Evans

Mark Kinsler writes in 030820 MMDigest:

_Please_ delete it from your mind immediately! Causing all the lead
tuning weights to melt, de-tempering, distorting and de-tuning the
comb is not a good restoration principle. Might be quicker just to
throw the music box away first.

Heat applied to music box combs _must_ be kept to an absolute minimum.
Even soft soldering is best accompanied by heat shunts to prevent the
heat travelling to adjacent parts of the comb, as de-tempering results
in poor 'ring' from the teeth. The hardness is normally just higher
than blue, but different manufacturers had different ideas on this.
I use a 150 watt soldering iron to finally fit the new tooth, with
brass block heat shunts on either side clamped onto the comb.

As Eliyahu says, why use any other method? It's quick, reliable and
has been used for 100 years as a repair technique.

Best wishes
