Repairing Musical Box Comb With Adhesive
By Frank Metzger

To the correspondent who asked the question about attaching comb teeth
with super glue or epoxy [030818 MMDigest]:

1. It won't be stable or firm enough to withstand the constant
vibratory forces

2. It won't transmit its vibrations in the same way or in the same
quality as a well made metal-to-metal joint

3. If it could be done at all, then to do it well is as much trouble
or more as a solder joint. All the work is in the preparation. Once
that is done properly the soldering is easy.

In general, it is not 'cricket' for an amateur to criticize restorers
in a lump just because someone may not be willing to give away the
technology learned through mistake and sweat equity. Actually, most
restorers will tell you anything you want to know since the amateur
will need to work very long and very hard to do it as well as a
competent restorer. Those who want to restore antiques to a proper
standard must serve a long apprenticeship and an even longer practice
time before they can rightfully call themselves restorers.

And, by the way, phrases like "...Or do they not care so long as they
are raking in the money now..." will start a thread here that you don't
want to cause. Restorers earn their money by working hard at their
profession as probably you do too. Think about it!
