Hi Folks, I guess I was the one who started the thread on steam
engines of all sizes. I was searching for fuel pellets which are not
available in Delaware. Thanks, Robbie, for allowing all the informative
responses since, indeed, larger steam engines are certainly related to
mechanical music instruments.
Because of a flood of responses, I now have a supply of miniature steam
engine fuel pellets that should last a life time. With my grandson,
I immediately lubricated the parts, checked the whistle, etc., but did
I not exercise the steam relief valve. The camping stove fuel pellets
I used seem to have much higher heat (BTU) than the miniature steam
engine pellets. We prepared the 35 year-old engine, lit the 6 pellets
and stepped back to watch the fun.
While the engine was running like crazy, I noticed that steam was
escaping from every joint and from around the base of the relief value.
As I stepped back, the piston for the flywheel blew off in a large
cloud of steam. I threw a rag over the "exploding" engine and watched
as we had our own Yellowstone Park geyser!
The very next day an MMD posting warned to be sure to exercise the
relief value, particularly if the engine has not been operated recently.
Thanks to all on MMD who responded. For others with miniature steam
engines, listen to the many experts on MMD. They have "been there,
done that," and they can help you prevent a serious accident.
Regards,
Rick Cooley
[ I'm thankful you weren't injured, Rick. I hope someday you and
[ your grandson will connect the (rebuilt) little boiler and engine
[ to power a mechanical music instrument. What fun! :-) -- Robbie
