Kimball Electramatic Player Piano Control Problems
By John Neiswinger

Greetings to all MMDers. I received a call from the local music store
the other day -- they had sold a 1965 Kimball Electramatic spinet that
was in working order and the first time the customer attempted to use
it after delivery, the machine malfunctioned. I've always considered
these "modern" players poison, but as it was close by I agreed to take
a look.

This is the model with the two motor setup. I have replaced a stripped
gear in one of these before, but I am totally unfamiliar with it's
operation.

The piano would not stop rerolling. I fumbled around with the wiring,
etc., but really did nothing. The reroll now doesn't work and the
tempo slide control in the left cheek block runs full speed. When
I hit the stop button, everything shuts down, but the reroll motor
does not kick in. Everything appears clean. I need a schematic or
some advice from someone that is familiar with the theory of operation.

I did get the reroll motor running when I connected two of the wires
coming out of the microswitch that detects no roll on the takeup
spool. This may be the problem as nothing responded when I manually
actuated this switch.

Is this a mercury type switch? I could probably figure it out with
a schematic. I also do not know the function of the pneumatic leaf
switches, one of which toggles a microswitch inside the top electronic
control box which is now non-responsive.

Pretty tough to trouble shoot when you aren't sure what it's supposed
to be doing. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated by me and
the customer that may not get his money back.
