About two years ago I announced the availability of my collection of
over 1400 BAR/ANN files for use with a PowerRoll fitted to an Ampico.
Now, after all this time, I have finally completed the work on the MIDI
files from this collection.
Processing over 1400 files has taken more time than I ever expected,
but they are now together, along with detailed catalogs. I've divided
the collection into three CDs: classical, popular (each US$ 250,
containing around 700 files) and the full collection (US$ 400, with
all 1431 files). Local collectors think they sound great, as they are
optimised to play on a Disklavier, PianoDisc and so on. They even
sound good on computer speakers.
These files were all created from scans I made on my electro-pneumatic
scanner, which had a singular advantage; I could monitor the recording
as it was being made. This sometimes meant taking a day or more to
record one roll, due to the difficulties some rolls presented. But it
also meant the final recording would perform on my Ampico like the roll.
Because I used air to "read" the roll, and tuned the scanner to work
with the Ampico, the end results are performances that take into
account the effect of an electric interface in a pneumatic piano, which
pretty much matches the characteristics of a solenoid MIDI piano.
I'll be updating my web site soon, but sample MIDI files are currently
on the site for download. See
