Benjamin Intartaglia asked in 030708 MMDigest about the birth and
death dates of some familiar piano roll artists, including Herbert
Clair and Adam Carroll. I remarked:
>[ Herbert Clair is possibly a pseudonym for Adam Carroll. When
>[ Carroll left Republic for Ampico, Herbert Clair mysteriously
>[ followed! Are you preparing a programme for a Pianola concert,
>[ Benjamin? ;-) -- Robbie
Soon I received private messages from alert MMDers Randolph Herr
and Michael Swanson, questioning my allegation about Herbert Clair.
Much later I realized my error: I was really thinking of artist
Victor Lane, not Herbert Clair. It is Lane who I wonder is really
Adam Carroll. I regret the confusion that my erroneous comment about
Herbert Clair created.
A photo labeled Victor Lane appears alongside Adam Carroll in the 1920
poster of Republic artists. Shortly after Carroll began making piano
rolls for Ampico, Victor Lane also made a few rolls. Nothing is known
about Lane, so I'm suspicious! See Frank Himpsl's article and the
Republic poster at http://mmd.foxtail.com/MMMedia/Republic/index.html
